We are Renewable World. We enable people living in poverty to transform their lives by improving their access to clean energy, empowering them to develop sustainable and resilient livelihoods, and mitigating the impact of climate change.

Story

I've been working on energy issues for the best part of 20 years, as an academic and policy adviser. Whilst this is very rewarding, I'm raising money for Renewable World this year because I would like to make a more practical impact on some of the world's poorest communities. Around 1.4 billion people still lack access to electricity - and many suffer from the effects of indoor air pollution due to the use of traditional fuels.

As a Renewable World trustee, I've watched the charity grow first hand - from humble beginnings just 5 years ago to the thriving organisation of today. Renewable World is starting to make a real difference to people's lives through renewable energy projects in remote communities in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Their projects light up homes, schools and clinics; clean water is pumped to households for washing, cleaning and cooking, and to fields for crop irrigation. Access to energy also supports income generating activities for these communities, and improves access to health and education opportunities.

Perhaps just as important, Renewable World is helping to develop the skills of local communities and organisations who will ensure that these projects are sustainable - and that many more people have access to the benefits of electricity.
