Story

Dear All,

I am moving out to Egypt for the next 3 months to volunteer as a vet for the charity Animal Care Egypt (ACE). The charity works to improve the lives of the working horses and donkeys of Egypt and in doing so also helps the people who rely so heavily on these animals. The charity aims to provide sustainable solutions and education to the people of Egypt in order to prevent the horrific injuries that these animals suffer from. They also provide free veterinary care to any working animal that needs it, and in doing so they are slowly changing attitudes towards animals out there and improving these animals lives.

For example, one of the most common problems is harness sores. The horses and donkeys are still used as the main transport for bricks, steel and cement in building as well as many other trades. Some of these animals never have their harnesses taken off- they work all day and then get tied up with their tack still on. ACE has built a 'shower block' to encourage owners to take off their animals harnesses and wash their backs from the sweat and dirt accumulated there. ACE also has enclosed sand pits where the horses and donkeys can lie down and roll- something many of these animals may not have done since they were foals. ACE also checks the harnesses and swaps poorly fitting harnesses for more comfortable ones.

ACE does a huge amount of work for these working animals, this is only a very small example, but they are changing the attitudes towards animals- setting up shows for the children who can win 'best kept horse/donkey' prizes for those animals that are a good weight, have no sores and have well fitted tack. This means that people are starting to take pride in caring for their animals and realising that they aren't just another form of transport but that they do feel.

The ACE hospital in Luxor is in desperate need of 'vet wrap' a cohesive bandage which they cannot source in Egypt. Please could you donate a couple of pounds to buy a bandage which will enable the vets in Luxor to provide treatment to the injured horses and donkeys out there? I will buy the bandages wholesale and take them with me when I fly to Luxor.

Thank you very much for your support.
