The Prison Phoenix Trust - Yoga Aid 2009 · 31 October 2009 ·

Our trauma-sensitive yoga and meditation programmes support the rehabilitation of offenders and improve education and training opportunities for people in prison, with an evidence-based approach to enhancing wellbeing, reducing recidivism, and preparing individuals for life beyond custody.

Story

We did it!  Yippee! 8 men from HMP Lewes & me completed 108 sun salutations this morning. Followed by a very well earnt Savasana! Thanks for all your support...and feel free to keep it coming! Jo x

As many of you know I teach  weekly Yoga classes at HMP Lewes both for inmates & staff.  These classes & many others like them throughout the prison community are supported by the Prison Phoenix Trust.

PPT are a dedicated charity who offer the valuable resources of Yoga & Meditation through setting up classes, providing a letter writing service & offering Free books & CD's to prisoners around the country.

On 29th October during my classes at HMP Lewes my students & I will attempt to complete 108 Sun Salutations! Obviously my students will not be able to participate in the Yoga Show event itself, however this gives them an opportunity to feel engaged & involved in something very special.

Please support us in raising much needed funds so that PPT can continue their valuable work.

The main Yoga Aid Challenge takes place on Saturday 31st October at The Yoga Show.

I believe this sharing of Yoga with prisoners offers them an opportunity for freedom behind bars. The techniques help them to be present to and deepen a sense of responsibility for past and present actions which can help them shed the offending behaviour patterns that led them into crime. Silence and the breath are time honoured means - known to all religions. A daily practice of yoga and meditation calls for self-discipline and concentration, skills that many prisoners say they are not used to and which they become heartened to discover in themselves.
