Big Fun Run Leeds 2011 · 13 August 2011 ·
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On the 13th of August myself Eloise and our friends and family are doing Leeds 5k Fun Run to raise as much Money as possible for Diabetes Uk
This is a charity I am totally passionate about as they fund very exciting research into all aspects of diabetes treatments and potential methods for curing this awful condition. Juvenile diabetes is a chronic life threatening condition that occours when the bodys immune system attacks insulin prouducing cells in the pancreus,at present there is no definitive answer to what causes it.
In September 2010 our lives changed forever when our 10 year old daugther was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes, Eloise now wears an Insulin pump that she has attached to her body via a cannula 24 hours a day we change this every 2 days, she will be insulin dependent for the rest of her life, unless a cure is found.
The last few months have brought many challenges - not just the daily (and nightly!) difficulties of trying to keep Eloise alive and healthy - constant blood testing to determain the necessay insulin dosage or to make sure her blood levels are not dangerously high or low, carb counting, hospital visits, dealing with hypos, checking keytones when she is poorly to prevent Diabetic Ketoacidosis & the constant worry of long tearm complications - but we have also faced new challenges as we look ahead to Eloise starting High school trying to teach her how to manage her Diabetes.
It is a scary though to think that before Doctors Banting, Macleod, Best and Collip invented insulin in 1922 ,children with Eloise's condition would die. It only took a few weeks or months.
Diabetes Uk is the largest Charity in the Uk devoted to the treatment & care of people with Diabetes to improve the lives of people with the condition.
The incidence of Type 1 diabetes is forecast to double in the under 10's by 2020. It could happen out of the blue to your child or anyone you know. The cause is unknown.
So please donate if you can, thank you
