Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I’ve entered the Clipper round the world yacht race, one of the most formidable challenges available to amateur sailors. The race starts from the uk on 1 September. I’m on the first 3 legs which take me across the Atlantic Ocean to Uruguay. Then back across the Atlantic to Cape Town. Then the ‘Southern Ocean Sleigh ride’ down to Fremantle, Australia. I then miss a couple of legs before rejoining in Zhuhai, China for the big North Pacific leg to Seattle.
I’ve never done anything remotely like this before and approach it with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. As much as anything it will be an interesting social experiment to throw 20 strangers together on a small boat, keep them cold, hungry and, at times, terrified. Shake vigorously and observe. There’s a book in there but I think it’s already been written by William Goulding in ‘Lord of the Flies.’
I’m on the big blue UNICEF boat and am raising money for unicef uk. I’m not normally a fan of international charities, particularly ones with a political agenda and funded largely by governments. UNICEF seems different in that around 70% of funds raised reach the front end, the CEO is relatively modestly remunerated and most of its funds are raised from the public rather than allocated by governments. I’m a supporter and hope you feel able to donate.
Needless to say, all the money raised will go to unicef and I’m not asking you to pay for my adventure!
