Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

What was the Challenge?

To get between the 2 furthest apart inhabited points on mainland Britain between sunrise on the longest day of 2014 and sunrise of the following day, on motorbikes that have cost no more than £300 to buy and prepare, and without breaking any laws.

The challenge is all about endurance - both man and machine – and strength of character, NOT speed.

Sunrise at John o'Groats on the 21st June 2014 is at 04.04 hrs

Sunrise at Lands End on the 22nd June 2014 is at 04.51 hrs.

I have 24hrs and 47 minutes to complete the challenge.

The Route....

The most direct route from John o'Groats to Lands End is a smidge over 840 miles. But this involves motorways....lots of motorways....and if there's one thing cheap motorbikes don't like it's motorways. And the riders of cheap motorbikes don't like standing by the side of a motorway ruefully contemplating the remains of their cheap motorbike.

So, the fastest route, without going on any motorways, is 906 miles long.

Sticking to the speed limit at all times, these 906 miles will take just under 21hrs to cover, at an average speed of 45mph....that's 21 hours at 45mph non-stop: not allowing for traffic lights, roundabouts, traffic jams, roadworks…

So I got at best, 3hrs and 47 minutes for fuel stops (at least 6 needed), eating, calls of nature, getting lost, etc.
