Cairdeas aims to improve the availability and quality of palliative care services in the global south. It does this through consultancy, education, training and mentoring; and is currently working with partners in India, Uganda, Rwanda, Gaza and Mauritania.

Story

This January we (John and Rosemary Dyer) were privileged to go out to Uganda to visit our daughter, Dr. Joanna Dunn, a palliative care registrar who is working for Hospice Africa Uganda for a year. During our visit we met Dr. Mhoira Leng, with whom Joanna has been working on the development and teaching of the new degree in Palliative medicine. Mhoira is the Medical Director of the charity 'Cairdeas' which supports the development of Palliative care in developing countries (Please refer to their website for more detail about their work in Uganda and elsewhere).

Joanna is now planning to stay in Uganda for another 6 or 12 months to work with Cairdeas, especially working in the Mulago Hospital in Kampala helping to develop the new Palliative Care Unit there, and also continuing to  help with the teaching and development of the degree course.

Having supported the English Hospice Movement for many years, and excited by the work that our daughter is now doing in this beautiful country where those with terminal illness are in such desperate need, we would like to support the work of Cairdeas so we are asking you to sponsor  our 'team' on 20th June, when they will be cycling the 'Clevedon challenge', a ride of 38 miles. Team members: John, Hugh and his wife Angela, and Angela's brother Peter Neville.

Our son Hugh also visited Uganda in April and was able to talk more to Mhoira about her work, and so he is very keen to support all that she does.
