My advice is not to commit to hair-brained challenges after a few beers, no matter how good the idea seems at the time. It was in a bar in the alpine resort of Morzine in 2016, that I'm (reliably!) informed I signed up to participate in LEJOG 2018.
LEJOG 2018 is a 970mile bike ride, over 9 days, from Land's End to John O'Groats in September. The total climbing amounts to circa 1.8 x the height of Everest. This is a serious undertaking for someone who had not seen their bike for almost two decades and not done any serious exercise for just as long. We will also sleep in tents!
So what's inspired me to sign up:
a) we've chosen to support the Meningitis Research Foundation, raising donations to help fund research into this brutal and indiscriminate disease. Please see the pages of some of my team mates; it's really sad and surprising to see how many people are personally touched by Meningitis. With your help, it will be great to support such a deserving charity in some small way
b) I'm joining a great team, about a dozen of us, & look forward to the adventure
c) it's the perfect opportunity to put 20years of insufficient activity behind me once and for all
The ride is organised and supported by Deloitte Ride Across Britain, go to their web-site www.rideacrossbritain.com if you want to learn more about the event or pick a spot along the route to cheer us on.
Sat here in March 2018 it looks like a formidable challenge, I'm still not sure I know what I've committed to ... but I'm hopeful that 5 months of training and the thought of raising a few (hopefully serious) £££ for the meningitis research will enable us all to cross the finish line.
I'd really appreciate any motivational donations (£££) you can offer to this great cause, I'll be thinking about how your kind donations might help progress research in eradicating this disease on every hill climb.
