My story
We did it! The 72 mile run was completed in just over 20 hours - thank you for the fantastic support - over 80 friends dropped in on the run at some stage during the party. I am sure I still managed to eat more calories during the day than were used!
Thank you also for the very generous donations - its not too late to donate if you haven't yet done so!
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
So please dig deep and donate now.
I hope you will join me at some stage for my birthday celebration/challenge on Saturday 21 May 2011.
Below are the details of the challenge I have set myself for my 50 birthday. I have been fortunate to have enjoyed my running for over thirty years, much of it around the beautiful countryside of East Devon. I am planning to run 70 miles on 21 May in under 24 hours and I have set myself this challenge for a number of reasons:
1. Stating the obvious, it is a challenge and I am not sure that I will be able to complete the distance in the time and I like a challenge!
2. The route (described in detail below) is around the perimeter of probably the best ‘playground’ in the world.
3. It is an opportunity to raise money for the local cancer charity Force – details of the charity can be found at - http://www.forcecancercharity.co.uk/.
4. Rather than having a party I am hoping friends will join me for stretches of the route, no matter how short – it will be a run/walk averaging 4-5 miles an hour.
To use the old cliché, ‘I am keen for your presence rather than presents’. For those who would like to put their hand in their pocket I am raising money for the cancer charity Force, donations can be made at http://www.justgiving.com/John-Keast , also happy to relieve you of any cash!
I’d like to stress that the pace will be very slow, now that I am maturing I am starting to appreciate the journey rather than the speed of completion – it’s taken me a while to work this out. I hope it will be a sociable affair and that some folk not normally seen out running will join in and walk a stretch.
I will be joined by friend Don Cawthera, for the entire route, who celebrated his 50 birthday last month – we are happy to be joined by anyone else who would like to do the whole route.
We’d also be grateful for support in providing food and drink along the way – please let me know if you are able to help with this.
Route and Schedule
The information below provides an estimate of the distance – you can work out roughly where we will be, based on an average speed of 4-5mph. You can also ring my mobile (07766664465) or Cathy’s mobile (07779717629) to find out about progress so you can join in at a time and distance convenient to you.
Start – 03.30 Sidmouth Sailing Club, Saturday 21 May 2011.
Summary of route – coastal path to Exmouth, East Devon Way to Lyme Regis, return to Sidmouth along the coastal path (this last stretch is likely to hurt – I am looking forward to much abuse and encouragement along this stretch!)

I do hope you will join in at some stage. Some of the route Middle Knapp to Colyton is on the road – and down hill so can be done on a bike (with stabilisers as the pace will be slow).
