Story

Having watched the 2009 Sports Relief Cycle Event from John O'Groats to Lands End where David Walliams and 6 other celebrities relayed 1407km in 82hrs; a plan was hatched to better the event and raise at least £15k to help British servicemen and women.

Over a period of 13days, 9 serving soldiers from the Royal Engineers will endure a total of 2257km, with each and everyone of them cycling from John O'Groats to Lands End. In addition to this they will cycle via every UK mainland regular army Royal Engineer barracks, a total distance further than that cycled in the Tour de France. Further more, a 20km swim and 30km run will be undertaken, thus simulating the port to port crossing between mainland UK and Northern Ireland, and the distance from the port in Northern Ireland to 38 Engr Regt.

It is anticipated that they will leave John O'Groats on the 31 Jan 11. From here they will cycle at an average speed of 20-25kph to each of the following locations, finishing up at Lands End on the 12 Feb 11:

Ripon,
Nottingham,
Waterbeach,
Wimbish,
Woodbridge,
Chatham,
Maidstone,
Camberley,
Hermitage,
Andover,
Barnstaple

As at 21 Aug 10, a total of 332 British forces personnel or MOD civilians have died while serving in Afghanistan since the start of Operations in Oct 01. Of these, 292 were killed in action. In addition to this over 1400 UK military and civilian personnel were admitted to UK Field Hospitals and categorised as Wounded in Action, many of whom lost limbs and will now live very different lives.

We cannot pay high enough tribute to the job that these servicemen and women are doing or the sacrifice some of them have made. It is for these reasons that all 9 participants of the event will be pushing themselves to their mental and physical limits , cycling an average of 174km each day in weather conditions that could prove to be extremely unforgiving, trying to raise £15k for both The Soldiers' Charity and Toe in the Water.

The Soldiers' Charity support servicemen and women who put everything on the line to defend us, and our country. They offer them a lifetime of support whether they be serving soldiers or veterans.

Toe in the Water (TITW) inspire servicemen and women who have sustained often traumatic injuries, including the loss of limbs, to move beyond their disability and to become re-inspired by life. It does so by providing a unique opportunity for them to competitive sail and race on equal terms with their able bodied contemporaries. Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - we raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

So please dig deep and donate now.
