In January 2012 it felt like our world fell apart. What should have been the start of one of the happiest times of our lives went wrong. Nicola was pregnant, but it went wrong, it went wrong in a big way. What was supposed to be a baby growing inside her turned in to a tumour. We were devastated. At the time it was a blur, it was initially something we thought we would just get through and try again, we even assumed that when in hospital we would be home the following weekend to go away as planned, give it a couple of months - back to normal. It wasn’t to be.
There were a few things that got us trough, but the one constant was the support we both got from the fabulous team at Sheffield Weston Park Hospital, especially Jane and Sarah. They obviously helped Nicola, but they were also there for me, explaining what was going on and listening to me when I didn’t know who to talk to. Even today, over 5 years on, they are still there when the 6 monthly samples are due or if we have question.
It’s a few years since I’ve done anything to say thank you, this is by far the biggest challenge.... windsurfing I could do in my sleep, the Yorkshire 3 peaks was a walk in the park.... this I am having to train for, like I’ve never done before. Proper training, that hurts, in rain, wind and over mud, cobbles and towpaths... pushing my 15st lump around a half marathon. It’s not going to be easy, but it’s nothing compared to what some people are going through right now. GTD is pretty horrible but thanks to the research done in Sheffield it is something that can be treated successfully by a great team.
The boring bit.... but it’s needed. As the say it’s simple and works.
