Wells for Zambia's remote Western Province

John Payne is raising money for Village Water

Working with district, provincial & national partners in Zambia & Mozambique, we support lasting, local solutions to reach everyone with water, sanitation & hygiene, leaving no one behind. Clean water, decent toilets & good hygiene practices, mean good health, and greater access to education

Story

Jane and I recently visited remote rural villages in Western Zambia with a team from Village Water UK. It was a life-changing experience for both of us. We saw villages whose only source of water was a scoop hole in the dry season and flood water in the rains. Children frequently have diarrhoea, coughs and eye disease. 30% of children die by the age of 5. Life expectancy is 38. We saw the huge difference it makes when a well is installed and a hygiene program initiated. In addition to health benefits the villagers are able to spend more time growing extra crops maybe generating some income. The whole community spirit is raised.

We came back determined to raise funds for more and more wells. A well costs about £2500. Jane has already raised enough for a well through her End to End bike ride. I'm going to sponsor one well personally. How many more can we raise funds for? Please help us to hit the target for the first JustGiving well as soon as possible.

Village Water is known as the "Little Giant" in Africa because it is so effective with its limited resources. Trustees and supporters of Village Water from the UK visit the area each year, self funded, to assess progress and areas of need. The Zambian teams are trained in water dowsing, engineering and  well digging and lining. The teams also work closely with the communities to build sanitation and hygiene facilities and education.
