Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.
Having been supporters of the charity Scottish Love in Action since it started, we are for the first time going to India in February with a party of 15 organised by SLA to see how much has been achieved in the decade of its existence, and to help with current projects. We are all paying our own way, so that all the money we collect will go to the orphans.
Alison will be helping to create murals on the classroom walls in the home-cum-school in Tuni, Andhra Pradesh. Alison has also received a very generous donation of £1,000 from the Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society (of which she is Secretary) towards the creation and development of 'class gardens', for each of the school classes in Tuni. The focus will be on growing crops for food, to aid self-sufficiency. It is likely that much of her time in India will be occupied in getting this project established.
John is taking out hockey equipment for the younger children, and showing them the rudiments of the game (talk about coals to Newcastle!); he will also help in the building of a new classroom in a coastal village near Tuni.
Both of us will help in the day-to-day activities associated with feeding, teaching and playing with over 500 children.
SLA has made commitments to care for these children - to ensure that they are housed, fed, kept healthy and educated to a standard which enables them to break out of the cycle of poverty, deprivation and exploitation which the Dalits ('untouchables') have suffered for generations. To do this SLA relies on the generosity of the general public, in Scotland and further afield. The charity keeps in direct touch with the Indian children in its care - it knows where every penny goes.
Prior to making this trip we would like to raise some money for SLA to help them with their excellent work. So please dig deep and donate now.
