Virgin London Marathon 2010 · 25 April 2010 ·

At Princess Alice Hospice, we provide exceptional end of life care in our hospice and in the community. We know we can’t prevent death, but we do whatever we possibly can to make it the best it possibly can be. But, above all, we believe that hospice care is for living.

STOP PRESS !!!  19 APRIL 2010

There is only one word I have, gutted…

I had an MRI scan 6 weeks ago and had to stop running, it showed I had a stress fracture in the 3rd metatarsal in my left foot.

I was on crutches for 2 weeks after which I kept up the x-training, I was under the illusion I might still make the start line of the London Marathon… After a 2nd MRI and consultation with the surgeon last week (who said I should not run for at least another 4 weeks) I had to make the call.  It's a no.

I have raised nearly £2,000 for the hospice thanks to you, and you are a select few, just over 20 people have sponsored me so far.

My plan is to postpone my marathon campaign for 6 months,  I have a place in the Berlin Marathon on the 26th Sept.  So recovery going well I will still be running a marathon in 2010!   I'll certainly be making a bid for London next year also.

As you sponsored me to run London I would be only too happy to arrange for the hospice to refund your money should you wish.

I'll keep you updated and thanks again,

John

14 FEB 10

10 weeks today I shall be running the London Marathon. Prior to October last year the longest I had run in my life was for about 45 minutes...  so why, you may well ask?

In May of last year my Mother lost a five year battle with cancer.  Initially cared for in a general hospital in the final weeks of her life, it was clear to all concerned that they were beginning to struggle to provide Mum with the level of care required.  After a couple of days waiting the family were told there was a bed available at the Princess Alice Hospice.  Words cannot describe the feeling in the first few hours once we all, together as a family, arrived at the hospice.  It was clear this was the very best place that Mum could be.  The facilities were as such that Mum could enjoying seeing her grandchildren play in the garden, have her bed virtually wheeled outside for some fresh air and have one of us to spend the night at her bedside.   About a week after arriving, with her family at her bedside, Mum slipped away.

It was that day I said to myself I was going to do something as challenging as I could, raising as much money as possible, as obviously people had done before me, to continue to help the Princess Alice provide their fantastic facilities for others.

I've been training since Christmas and am up to about 25 miles a week.  I ran the Great South Run last year purely as a training run for the marathon, http://connect.garmin.com/activity/17069531 which was tough and that was only 10 miles!! It did show me what it was like running with thousands of people though which was good experience.

Please dig deep, the hospice only receives 25% of it's funding from the NHS, the rest is made up from donations.

Many thanks, John
