Guy's and St. Thomas' Charity - MPD Support Abseil · 27 June 2010 ·

MPN Voice leads the way in supporting people with rare blood cancers called Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPNs), with accurate information and emotional support. We're funding research toward better treatments and one day a cure. Most importantly we offer hope to those affected by MPNs.

Story

Did you enjoy climbing trees as a child? I didn't. In fact, I've never had much of a head for heights. I'd even go so far as to say that i am downright afraid of them. If you ask my brother and sister they will tell you that I even had trouble climbing a gate.

So you might be asking why on 27th June this year I am going to be abseiling from the top of Guy's Hospital Tower - the world's tallest hospital tower. Standing at 469ft and comprising of 34 floors, it represents the culmination of my childhood fears.

Well, for me the answer is simple. It is an event to raise funds for MPD support. MPDs (myeloproliferative disorders) are rare blood cancers that affect people of all ages.  These disorders cause debilitating fatigue, blood clots, heart attacks, strokes and increase the risk of leukaemia.

My mother is an MPD sufferer -she was diagnosed several years ago. The impact on her life has been huge, she has regular hospital monitoring and has a hefty drug regime that she must adhere to.

MPD-Support was formed in 2006, it is a charitable foundation and it is their goal to raise funds to support research to find a cure for myeloproliferative disorders. It is vital that research and drugs-trials happen, and that patients and their families are offered help, information, support and guidance.  MPDs are not "sexy" or well known diseases, and they need constant charitable donations to fund all these things.

There are only 12,000 sufferers in the UK. It is not a well known illness and does not receive a great deal of funding. Every penny that I raise will go towards funding research into this disease so please give generously.
