‘The Road goes ever on and on,
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can.
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way.
Where many paths and errands meet,
And whither then? I cannot say.’
Thank you for taking the time to visit my Big Walk 2018 Just Giving page.
The Big Walk 2018 is a walking challenge organised by the University of Sheffield to raise money for the Sheffield Scanner campaign. The challenge will take place on 22nd June and comprises a 26.2 mile, marathon-distance walk through the Peak District, starting in Lodge Moor and finishing on the University campus. The University of Sheffield's Sheffield Scanner campaign aims to raise £2 million for a ground-breaking MRI-PET scanner facility, the first of its kind in Yorkshire. The Sheffield Scanner will represent the next leap forward in medical and imaging research and have a crucial role for research and patients in many areas of medicine, including cancer, neurodegenerative diseases such as Motor Neurone Disease, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, heart disease, diabetes and stroke. More information about the Sheffield Scanner can be found at www.sheffield.ac.uk/sheffieldscanner
Working for the University Health Service and having worked in the past for Stereotactic Radiosurgery, Neurology and Neurosurgery at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, I understand the importance and overwhelmingly positive impact the Sheffield Scanner will have and feel it is a fantastic cause to support.
This is my first ever Big Walk challenge, or indeed any challenge of this magnitude in a very long time, and I feel the need to push myself to see exactly what I can achieve. My Dad was an avid hiker and I spent most of my youth out with him on a trail or up a mountain somewhere, so this would be a great way to honour his memory too.
I am not doing this challenge alone; along with all the other University of Sheffield staff and students who are taking part are some of m'colleagues from the University Health Service - they should be listed above if you fancy showing them some support too.
As a dancer and Squire of Harthill Morris who knows, if I raise enough money I might get out my Morris dancing bells and literally do The Big Walk with Bells On!
