On 28th -29th May , We walked up Ben Nevis and Scafell Pike. We reached the foot of Ben Nevis at 5.30 pm and got back down again at midnight after having faced hail, rain, sleet and snow and high winds. We reached Scafell at 7.00 am but had to put up with rain and high winds and some dodgy old knees so got down at about 1.00pm . As for Snowden well if you count a stroll on the prom at Llandudno and a visit to the Snowden tandoori well then it was a magnificient triumph....but may be we finish off Snowden another time.... However I wouuld still like you to sponsor for an amazing cause so please read on.
I am looking to raise money for ADD International which aims to assist those with disabilities in third world countries for example through education and setting them up in business so that they are empowered and have the possibility of fending for themselves. Having 4 registered disabled boys on the autistic spectrum, we have battled to get our boys adequately educated and supported and have encountered apathy, ignorance and downright hostility along the way sometimes from acquaintances, the health and teaching professions, and the authorities and this in the UK which has in place structures to support those with disabilities. Nonetheless we have been overall fortunate as a family. I was therefore particularly moved about the plight of disabled people in the developing world. Over 80% of disabled persons in the third world live below the poverty threshold and in many instances are shunned by their own families and ignored by the state. 98%of disabled children are denied any kind of schooling. ADD sponsors projects in countries to enable disabled people to participate in society – examples of some of these projects include setting up a group of disabled women in poultry production in Uganda and to provide sign language manuals and training in Sudan. In Ghana ADD has facilitated blind and visually impaired people to vote and become election observers. It also acts as a lobby group; Of course there are many lobby groups but it is important: Cambodia passed its first Disability bill in 2009. ADD has also won awards for its work.
