Story
"In July 2013 I am cycling from London to Monte Carlo on the Mediterranean coast in a target time of 11 days in a bid to raise a little money for Alzheimer's Society, the UK's leading charity in the fight against a terrible and currently incurable disease.
Some of you will know that my mother, DIANE STAGE, very sadly passed away on 20th February 2013 after her long fight against Alzheimer's disease so the money raised by this epic "ride to the sun" will be going to a cause extremely close to my own heart.
Joining me will be my two great friends - MARK DARBY, an Old Carthusian with a penchant for cycling in France, and also my old Milton Abbey school friend TRISTRAM MORE-MOLYNEUX, a hugely accomplished alpine skier in his own right and enthusiastic amatuer road cyclist. My father, JOHN STAGE is also intending to cycle the whole way. Our Support Team member is ANDY HARRIS - ex Royal Fleet Auxiliary. Andy is to play a key role within the team and will provide vital logistical help throughout the journey hooking up with us three times a day at feed stations.
I hope that in the future there will be a cure, Alzheimer's disease is often much harder for the loved ones and dedicated carers of sufferers, and this incredible charity currently provides help across the board to all those affected which is why its so great. At the moment funding into Alzheimer's is really very low from the government (comparably) and medical bodies are struggling, not to mention constantly having to adapt to the growing number of sufferers as best they can.
With the above in mind: PLEASE HELP by donating a little money. If we can all afford £4:80 a time on deliciously chilled premium export lagers in London pubs then we should all think nothing of a small contribution here to a far superior cause.
Plus it will also spur me on enormously to keep my head down whilst pedalling hard and fast...(if the champagne, sports cars and glamorous ladies in Monte Carlo aren't enough)!
For those interested, the route I am taking south will be roughly 1150 miles. I have 13 days free but am aiming to complete the journey to Monte Carlo in just 11 days. We will be starting at the O2 Arena (Millenium Dome) and heading through the garden of England down to the white cliffs of Dover where we''ll receive a little help from a P&O ferry to Calais where we'll sleep our first night. From here we will follow the clear break in the clouds above to the better weather in the south. I will be posting a route map here or on Facebook nearer the time so you can see where we will be going exactly, and also plotting the ride on my MapMyRide.com page so you can see all the "anorak" information such as topography of the route, total ascent, decent, odometer readings and other interesting stats like calories burned, ave speeds, max speeds"
