Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I'm not much of a runner unless it's chasing after a football (and even then it's more of a gentle stroll these days) so a 30 minute run over 5.5km isn't something that comes natually.
But other than a chance to socialise and compete with colleagues, here's why I'm raising money for the National Literacy Trust.
The National Literacy Trust (NLT) is an independent charity dedicated to changing lives through literacy. Their vision is to help create a society in which everyone has the reading, writing, speaking and listening skills that they need to fulfil their potential.
Without literacy an individual is far less likely to take part in civic and cultural life, to be happy or to feel they are "doing well in life". Their opportunities in the job market are also severely affected.
Research confirms that literacy difficulties are linked to truancy and exclusion from school. These problems continue into adult life with one in six people facing inequality in the UK today because of their lack of good literacy skills. NLT works in the UK with people of all ages, with a focus on areas of disadvantage, linking home, school and the wider community to inspire learners and create opportunities for everyone.
UBS has supported the National Literacy Trust for several years by funding the costs of their Young Readers Programme involving children and their families in children’s centres, schools East London libraries.
