Story

Hazel Thompson has launched our Taken Campaign to rescue and rehabilitate girls and women from Mumbai’s red light district. Over two hundred girls and women have been saved from sex slavery and started a new life in a loving environment. This is a life-changing work and we need your help – any amount you can give, however small, will make a difference.

Funds donated to the Taken Campaign will be used for the Rescue and Rehabilitation Program by Jubilee Campaign’s partner Bombay Teen Challenge for women and children escaping Mumbai’s sex industry.

 

·         £2 pays for one day’s food for one child

·         £6 pays for three days food for one child

·         £15 pays for one month’s school fees for one child

·         £35 pays for equipment (scissors, rulers, marking utensils) for a women in the vocational training program

·         £48 pays for one child’s text books for one year

·         £60 pays for a monthly food bill for one child

·         £100 pays for an industrial sewing machine for a woman in the vocational training program

·         £195 pays for one year’s training for a women in the vocational training program

·         £235 pays for a year’s school fees for one child

About the author

 

‘Taken’ is Hazel’s life’s work, to investigate and expose the disturbing truth around India’s sub-culture of sex trafficking. Hazel immersed herself into Mumbai’s sex trade since 2002, and during this time she spent over 6 months living in Kamathipura, gaining unprecedented access into the second largest sex district in Asia through the trusted networks established by the Indian charity Bombay Teen Challenge.

 

Hazel applies her skill – and her passion – to photograph and film injustice and prejudice; telling powerful stories and creating global awareness around social and humanitarian issues. She often works closely with NGOs, where she tackles sensitive and sometimes controversial subjects, such as ‘Kids Behind Bars’ which was aired on ITN & CNN. Her essay on the UK’s teenage runaways ‘Home & Away’ evolved from an assignment for Observer Magazine into a three part news series for channel FIVE NEWS, where Hazel wrote, reported and presented the story on camera.

 

Her latest short film ‘Riva & Albert’ – a compelling story about friendship & love beyond generations- has been selected to screen at Brief Encounters as part of the Global Encounters Short Film and Animation Festival 2013. Hazel was both the co-producer and director of photography for this film.

 

Hazel has been engaged by The British Council to represent the best of British Photojournalism as an arts ambassador to Denmark, Vietnam and Uzbekistan. This relationship has evolved into a more recent commission for her to document the role of women in Qatar and Bahrain as part of an international arts project called “My Father’s House’’, which has toured the Gulf and UK for 3 years.

 

Hazel is also a highly acclaimed speaker, workshop facilitator and judge for a wide variety of conferences, festivals and competitions around the world.
