In October of 2009 we received the devastating news that my mum had Breast Cancer. At first the doctors thought she would need an operation and a few weeks of radiotherapy, but after finding the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes she needed a second operation. The doctors then recommended 6 months of chemo-therapy. This was Mums worst fear as she knew it would be inevitable that she would lose her hair.

Just two weeks  after the first dose of chemotherapy, just after christmas, Mums hair started to fall out, a little at a time at first then in large amounts. During a stay in hospital Mum was in the shower and nearly all of hair came out. Mum cried and cried to the nurses, who were fantastic.

Mum was fitted with two wigs, at some expense, and a fantastic hair dresser and friend, Lauren, who knows only too well how it feels to lose your hair as a cancer survivor herself , styled the wigs and helped Mum regain her confidence. Lauren works with Trevor Sorbie's charity "My New Hair".

I have hair down to my waist and felt it was time time for a change. With all the changes going on for Mum I want to show solidarity and support. Its very hard to know how to help as a relative of someone with Cancer and you can feel very helpless. I decided I wanted to have my hair cut off and donate it to a charity that could make the hair into a wig for someone that needs it. It was then that Lauren told me about the little princess trust.

"Little Princesses was started by the parents of Hannah Tarplee, her school and friends after Hannah sadly died in June 2005. Hannah was diagnosed as having a Wilms tumour and despite a brave battle; she eventually succumbed to the disease.

After Hannah died, so many people were offering help, financially and practically that Hannah’s parents, Wendy & Simon decided that the most fitting way to use this help was to start a charity dedicated to providing specialists children’s wigs – like so many ‘Little Princesses’, Hannah loved her hair and losing it was very traumatic.

At that time, finding specialist, high quality wigs for children was very difficult and only after a long search was a suitable company found who eventually made a wig for Hannah – something she enjoyed wearing, especially for special events. This company is now one of Little Princesses many suppliers.

Since its inception, the charity has now helped many children and continues to do so." ( www.littleprincesses.org.uk)

The little princess trust needs more than just a donation of hair to run. The cost of producing a real hair wig for a little princess is in the region of £300, and the trust supplies these wigs to children at no cost to their families. If the families were to have to buy an equivilant wig for their child it would cost in the region of £1500!! Many children need at least two or three wigs throughout the course of their treatment and the Little princess trust continue to provide wigs for the children for as long as they need them.
When I heard about the Little Princess Trust I couldnt think of a better way to show solidarity for my Mum. Having seen how devestating hair loss could be for a grown woman, as a mum of two I could only begin to imagine how a child would feel.

I'm hoping to raise at least £300 for Little Princesses, so my hair donation of 10-12 inches of hair can be accompanied by enough money to make my hair into a wig for someone very special. I will have my hair cut when this amount has been reached, however if we can exceed this target and help as many children as possible that would be fantastic (so please dont stop at £300 lol).

I'd also like to send my love and best wishes for a full recovery to little Elsie, my friend's 9 week old baby who has just been diagnosed with retinoblastoma (cancer of the eye) and started chemo this week.
