Hello everyone - and thanks VERY much for visiting this page

I'm running the Bisham Half Marathon on March 21st 2010 to raise money for the Frozen Ark Project.

Thousands of animal species are threatened with extinction.  Animal species are dying out at an unprecedented rate, largely through human population increase and its global effect on the planet’s ecosystems. Global warming is a major contributor to this destruction.  The double tragedy of losing a species to extinction is that we also lose millions of years of evolutionary genetic information - for ever.  Very very frightening!

Whilst the priority in all cases is to try to conserve the animals and their habitat, unfortunately in many a lot of cases we won't be successful.   So, the mission of the Frozen Ark Project is to collect, preserve and store tissue, gametes, viable cells and DNA from animals in danger of extinction. If cells are preserved, information about the species is saved.  Of course this is in no way an alternative to conservation - far from it.  But it does mean that we can continue to learn about these species.

And whilst the reconstruction of extinct species from frozen material is not yet practicable, but the possibility is not remote. If we fail to preserve the DNA and cells, the information and the possibilities will be lost forever.... if we do preserve samples, who knows what we might be able to do in the future.

The Frozen Ark is a fantastic project - but donating your money will go directly to help with the great work it does.

Justin
