We fund research into type 1 diabetes to find a cure for type 1 diabetes

Story

I work at Nationwide Cirencester branch and am doing  several fundraising events between now and March 2024 hoping to reach a target of 10k for this cause that is close to my heart.

In the meantime any donation made to this page would be fantastic.

Thankyou,

Karan & Isabelle

My Daughter Isabelle became extremely ill with cellulitis back in February 2020, after 3 lots of Anti biotics and her condition getting worse, we went back to the doctor to be told she needed to be on stronger antibiotics. That night on the 11th of March Isabelle was taken ill at home and rushed to Gloucester Royal Hospital to the ICU unit where we were told she had Type 1 diabetes which had been undiagnosed for an exceptionally long time. She received fantastic care; I can remember it being a ton of blood work hooked up to IVs lots of tears and why me. In the 2 weeks that Isabelle was in hospital we received lots of training saw lots of different nurses and consultants, the care she received was amazing.

COVID-19 hit the hospital and we were sent home to a life cut of from the outside world, we were in lockdown with a child that was extremely ill. We had great support from the Team at Gloucester Royal who we spoke to everyday and zoomed 3 times a week.
Seeing the physical and mental impacts that this disease has had upon Isabelle and my family has made me realise how difficult it is for others in our position to adapt to the plethora of changes and difficulties that it brings.
Type 1 diabetes is often very misunderstood, I never could have ever imagined how challenging and unforgiving the disease is, especially upon someone as young as my Isabelle who is 13 years old.
She has always immersed herself in every sport available to her and thoroughly enjoys being active.
Since being diagnosed, these once enjoyable activities to her have now become more challenging, having to always worry about whether her levels are stable and the daunting task of having to inject herself multiple times a day. We now must witness a once super confident and outgoing girl now struggle to get out of bed due to the psychological effects that it has had upon her.
Even just going into town is like a military operation, as we need to pack all the medical kit Isabelle will need. Isabelle worked out the other day that in the last 11 months since her diagnosis she has used over 3000 needles and has pricked her fingers over 2000 times to get her blood levels. In a lifetime a Type 1 Diabetic can get through over 250000 needles and prick their fingers over 140000.
When Isabelle was in hospital, she was given a blue backpack that contained RUFUS the type 1 Diabetic Teddy, Rufus helped Isabelle as he has points on his body that show where you can inject and Isabelle could also practice on RUFUS, so that she was confident to inject herself, the backpack also contained lots of leaflets and information that you need. This backpack is supplied by JRDF to all newly diagnosed children, it was a great help to both Isabelle and us as a family.

Isabelle goes to hospital every 2 weeks , has complex tests every 3 months , sees the dietician and has many more appointments throughout the year for her eye’s liver kidneys and circulation.

Isabelle has good days but also a lot of bad days but as Isabelle’s says I control my Diabetes my Diabetes doesn’t control me! ”
