On July 10th 2011 I will be jumping out of a plane to raise money for John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation. Not being a great fan of heights, this will be a challenge, but I figure I will be attached to someone and if they’re going, I’ll be going with them.
Lieutenant John 'JT' Thornton Royal Marine from Ferndown, Dorset was tragically killed aged 22 in Southern Afghanistan on 30 March 2008. The charity was set up by his family, to honour his life, by helping young people to achieve their potential. They do this by providing financial assistance to allow people to do activities and pursuits they may not have been able to do otherwise. Projects have included students going to Peru to complete a conservation expedition and India to build, furnish and decorate the inside of a library for an orphanage.
The JTYAF has allocated £65,000 for awards in 2011 to advance the lives of young people from the NE Forest Division of the Girl Guides, the Dorset Music Service, the Dorset Fire and Rescue Service Cadets, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, Ferndown Middle School, Beaucroft Foundation School, the Tall Ships Trust and the Coda Fiddle Orchestra which is in addition to the three core organisations, Ferndown Upper School, the Dorset and Wilts Wing of the Air Cadets and the Air Cadet Junior Leaders.
