Dementia Australia is a unified, national charity for people living with all forms of dementia, their families and carers. We represent the 487,500 Australians living with dementia and the estimated 1.6 million Australians involved in their care. We are the new voice of Alzheimer’s Australia.

Story

Demenita is an awful disease for both the people suffering from it and their families.  It's tough watching your family member change into someone you don't recognise or remember and they don't recognise you.

If you haven't had a family member with dementia yet, it's likely you will some time in the future.  It effects so many people yet it's one of those things that people tend not to talk about. But when I did talk about it, I was really surprised by how many friends and colleagues I had who were in or had been in the same boat.

Here's the stats:

  • There are more than 353,800 Australians living with dementia
  • Without a medical breakthrough, the number of people with dementia is expected to be almost 900,000 by 2050
  • Three in ten people over the age of 85 and almost one in ten people over 65 have dementia
  • An estimated 1.2 million people are involved in the care of a person with dementia
  • Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia and there is no cure
  • On average symptoms of dementia are noticed by families three years before a firm diagnosis is made

With those figures it's really important that more money goes into finding a cure for dementia.
