Set up in 2005 as a response to the tsunami in Sri Lanka. Today Ocean Stars offers these communities a route out of poverty by supporting a range of educational and livelihood projects.

Story

I have known Dilanee, the founder of Ocean Stars, since 2002 when we started our counselling training together so when she set up Ocean Stars in 2005 after the tsunami I was keen to help with what was the continuation of her personal journey.

I first went out to Sri Lanka in October 2008 to visit the various projects, work with children in nursery schools, and to visit for the first time the young girl and her family that I was sponsoring through OST. Having visited the country four times I have seen how valuable the support of Ocean Stars is and what a difference the money raised makes to the everyday life of the children and families I have met. What is so little to us makes such a difference to them.

The charity is now trying to set up local micro-projects so that funding for the different projects is sourced locally. Ocean Stars now needs the money to set up these projects including, for example, leaf cutting machines to cut palm leaves for basket weaving, etc.
