Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. So now I have been to Tanzania and completed the walk. It was a challenge but with my fellow trekkers, such an enjoyable one. We were all raising money for different charities and I have managed to raise the profile of NSPKU- which is great. HOWEVER MY CHALLENGE is not over. I intend to raise my target amount and so will keep on doing fundraising it whatever way I can until I get there.
My niece, Hannah, was diagnosed with Phenylketonuria (PKU) in October 1999. PKU is a rare genetic disorder that means her body cannot tolerate protein. Untreated it can lead to brain damage and severe mental handicap. As us parents know our newborn babies have a routine heel-prick test wthin days of being born. This test is in part for PKU, very few of us are aware of this and Hannah's test came back positive and as a result her condition can now be managed. She is on a strictly controlled low-protein diet with special supplements and can lead a normal, healthy life without the need for drugs or medicines. Hannah is a superb swimmer, (so she tells me!), she practices five times a week and has won lots of medals and a silver cup at galas in the south east. She has represented Surrey schools which means she is one of the top swimmers in Surrey. We are so proud of her.
The NSPKU is an invaluable source of information, guidance and support. The charity funds testing of food for its suitability for PKU sufferers. Testing a new food item costs £155, offering people like Hannah a bit more variety in their diet. £3000 raised would mean that nearly 20 new food items could be tested. It might not sound much but makes a big difference when you want to be able to eat the same foods as your friends.
