CancerCare is a local charity dedicated to helping adults and children affected by cancer or bereavement in North Lancashire and South Cumbria. We receive no government funding, and our work is only possible thanks to grant funders and people who donate, fundraise or give a gift in their Will.

Story

This charity is one that is extremely close to my heart. My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year. After a successful operation she is now in the middle of chemotherapy treatment and we are all hoping that by Christmas time her treatment will be done with and she will be on the road to recovery.

Cancer Care have supported my mum during her treatment by providing a range of therapies and activites totally free of charge. My mum has been attending Alexander Technique sessions which help stress relief and promote relaxation, which is an important part of ensuring that the body can function as effectively as possible during the trauma of chemotherapy.

Until my mum was diagnosed with cancer I never realised how chemotherapy treatment takes over your life.... in the bad weeks mum barely has enough energy to get out of bed, but on the good weeks she will push herself to go out on long walks and socialise and have fun with her many friends.

While it takes a lot of effort to get out of bed at 6am in the morning and go out for a long run before work, my mum's attitude and determination to keep active and enjoy life through this difficult time has really inspired me to train harder than ever and I am hoping to get a personal best time this year (less than 1 hour 53 mins) on my 6th Great North Run.

Anything you can give to this great charity will be used to help support cancer patients and ensure that this free of charge service can continue to provide the fantastic emotional, psychological, physical and social support that my mum is able to access.
