Story

UPDATE:

A team of Canterbury College Staff and friends completed the three highest peaks of the British Isles, in under 24 hours. The team included; Andrew Dowell, Vincent McCurry, Dewi Thomas-Friend, Dan Curran, Scott Byatt, Chris Harvey, Katie Haldane, Pete McCourt, Chris Ralph & Driver; Drew Howard The team started the challenge at 18.20 on Saturday 23rd June 2012, therefore the aim was to return to the car park at Snowdon before 18.20 the next day.

The team had everything against them; severe weather warnings, a large group, and a bus that was limited to 62mph.

The first challenge was Ben Nevis; the ascent was long and arduous with limited visibility, due to low cloud cover, for a majority of the climb. The group crossed over a waterfall some 500m up and walked through snow to reach the summit. The descent was more forgiving and the group were rewarded with a picturesque view once out of the cloud cover. The team completion time for Ben Nevis was 4 hours 40.

Scafell Pike was the next destination with a start time of 05.55. Severe weather warnings were issued, the lake had burst its banks and many people arriving at the car park were advised not to climb. The team decision was to push on up the mountain and turn around if it became too dangerous to complete. The decision was rewarded, the rain slowed and it was dry for a brief period. Once the torrent of fast flowing water was crossed, using parts of a ‘shed’ the mountain was tackled! Similar to Ben Nevis, however with more rocks to navigate around. The Cairns were our focal point and gave the team the psychological motivation to keep going and complete the mountain.

The final mountain was Snowdon; the team arrived in the Pen-y-pass car park at 14.45, giving them 3 hours 35 minutes to complete the challenge. The team lightened their kit in preparation and set off up the mountain in the sunshine. A fast early pace was set and the group made light of the Pyg track pathway getting up the mountain in a very quick time. For the descent, the team split in two and made their way down the Miners track; scrambling down scree and jumping down rocks. Once the group reached the flat of the Miners track many opted to jog to ensure a sub 24 hour time, however because of the speed of the ascent even the walkers made it across the line in 23 hours 57 minutes.

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page!

In July 2010 a family friend of mine was involved in a motorbike accident, sadly he didn't survive. He was sixteen years old.

If he had survived, it is likely that he would have had serious brain injuries. The Child Brain Injury Trust (CBIT) would have provided support and care to him and his family.

CBIT is a small charity which was established in 1991 and helps normal people that have been affected by tragedies. Just 5% of money raised by CBIT comes from the government, so they rely on the generosity of people to donate. The charity currently spends around £500,000 a year delivering services to families and professionals, so every donation, big or small is truly appreciated!!

On the 23rd of June 2012 I will be taking part in The 3 Peaks Challenge to raise money for children with acquired brain injuries. I will be climbing Ben Nevis (4409 ft), Scafell Pike (3,209 ft) and Snowdon (3,560 ft)... In 24 hours.

Starting at 5pm on the 23rd, we climb to the summit of Ben Nevis in Scotland,  and back down again to start the journey to Scafell Pike, England.  It should take around four hours of constant climbing to reach the peak and return to base camp.  Finally, we travel to Snowdon to climb 3,569 ft.  We are hoping to get back to the car park by 5pm on the 24th, completing the challenge in 24 hours!!!

So, please, please, please help raise money for this good cause! You really can make such a difference to people's lives, £1, £2, £5, anything you feel you can afford will being going to help children and their families who really do need it.

I want Tom to be remembered for the lovely, funny, happy boy he was, anyone that knew him would want the same, that is why I am raising money in his memory.

 Thank you :D
