Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I have decided to take part in the Forth Rail Bridge Abseil Challenge on July 1st of this year to raise funds for Parkinson’s UK,
a charity which is extremely close to my heart due to my amazingly brave and determined Dad, Vince Swales, who was sadly diagnosed with the progressive neurological condition back in 2012.

Those who know my Dad or family personally will know he has already overcome so much after surviving the world’s worst offshore oil disaster on July 6th 1988, when 167 of his friends were lost on the Piper Alpha, being one of only 61 survivors who survived the horrific ordeal and went home to their families. Dad's present battle in the form of Parkinson's has again shown us his sheer strength, character and determination which only adds to the admiration I have for this man who I am extremely proud to call Dad.

Heights are not exactly my strong point but when I take into account the battles Dad has endured and continues to endure, it seems very little in comparison and a fear I am willing to overcome as a small contribution of my appreciation for the work this charity is doing for us all.

Times like these are also a stark reminder that none of us are exempt from what life may hold around the corner, times which we may find ourselves powerless to help in the way we wish we could, so if anything, I hope this reminds Dad that I am behind him every step of the way and always will be.

And from Dad...

“I was diagnosed with PD six years ago although I knew there was something wrong well before then. It was like a bombshell being told what it was and how it progresses. From being a hands on linesman to realising I was finding it difficult to tie my boot laces and the hand tremor was devastating. My family and friends have supported me, as has my work family without which I think I would have called it a day. I have volunteered to help with research and Katie is abseiling down the Forth Road Bridge for Parkinson’s UK.  I’m so proud of Katie doing this as she doesn’t like heights. Parkinson's Disease needs people to be more aware of it and I hope you will consider a donation with this in mind.

A big thank you to all family friends for they’re continued support, Vince.”

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition which is thought to affect 1 adult in every 350 in the UK. Every hour, 2 people are told
the devastating news that they have Parkinson’s, a condition that unfortunately there is no current cure for but research continues to work towards. Symptoms can vary from person to person, along with severity but common symptoms can include muscle stiffness, slowing of movements and a tremor which can heavily impact upon everyday life for the person diagnosed. Simple daily activities which we all take for granted can become extremely difficult, which can progress over time and make every day a challenge.

I would greatly appreciate any donations great or small to contribute in the fight against Parkinson’s and raise crucial awareness, which really could affect any of our lives at any given time. All donations will not only go towards ground breaking research to find a much needed cure but also towards providing specialist care and support to the people affected and their families. As little as £10 funds two weeks of nutrients to grow brain cells in a lab, £20 provides an hour of care from a specialist Parkinson’s nurse and £48 funds two hours by a clinical researcher, to name a few.
