Story
1,000 MILE CYCLE TRIP IN 12 DAYS
Land’s End ("Bottom") to the Butt of Lewis on the Western Isles of Scotland ("Butt")
In June 2013, the ‘Mum and Son’ team of Katriona and Jamie Collins, ably supported by Rupert Collins, will attempt to cycle from the bottom to the top of the UK. In doing so, we hope to raise awareness and funds for Parkinson’s and the charity Parkinson’s UK.
Starting at Land’s End on Wednesday June 5, we will embark on a 1,000 mile journey, conquering rolling hills, winding valleys and demanding peaks to arrive at the Butt of Lewis on Sunday 16 June. Our final destination will take us away from the usual ‘End to End’ route of ‘Land’s End to John O’Groats ‘; instead, we will venture up through the beautiful Western isles of Scotland to finish the journey at their very North Western Tip.
You may well ask why are making this deviation…and why we are attempting this cycle at all…Well, as many of you know we love a physical challenge. But in addition to this, we want to raise as much money and awareness as possible for Parkinson’s UK, a charity that is very close to home. On the Isle of Harris (part of Scotland’s Western Isles) lives Katriona’s Mum, Catherine, with her husband Eddie.
Eddie is amazing. He can be seen in his high visibility cycling gear cycling around the island almost on a daily basis, battling the often strong winds and hills to keep fit. He is a very well know local character. This is a very admirable for anyone, but more so for Eddie who has suffered from Parkinson’s for many years. His day to day life has been affected by Parkinson's in many ways but his sheer drive and determination to keep going and fight the disease enables him to keep cycling and lead an active a life as is possible.
Whilst it is charities like Parkinson’s UK that have and will continue to support Eddie, we want him to be able to experience our challenge with us. He will hopefully be able to join us for our cycle through Harris and for the final stretch to the Butt of Lewis.
Please support our cause with a donation. If you would like to go a step further and join us for a stretch of our journey to experience the challenge with us, you are more than welcome!
