Story
Thank you for visiting my JustGiving Page. On April 13 2014 my Mum and I are running the London Marathon to raise money for this small charity. I have been training since September to prepare. Knowing that every penny I raise will go a long way to improving healthcare on this island has really kept me motivated through the long winter months. Please read more about the charity and help us to raise as much money as possible.
HIPZ (Health Improvement Project Zanzibar) was founded by UK Consultant Urological Surgeon Ru MacDonagh in 2006, with the vision to develop high quality, accessible and trusted health care facilities and clinical services to the people of Zanzibar and the neighbouring island of Pemba, and doing so, develop a model of healthcare provision which can be replicated in other developing countries.
Average life expectancy in Zanzibar is a staggering 47 years. One in 180 women die during delivery of their child and 1 in 6 children die under the age of 7 with the majority dying when aged less than 2 years.
HIPZ has stong links with the local health sector and government, which has led to a rather unique arrangement of the Government of Zanzibar formally handing over the running of the local Mackunduchi Hospital to HIPZ in 2007. Since then, the charity has transformed the healthcare services provided at this hospital
However there is still a lot more to do, and on top of this, based on the success at Makunduchi, the Government of Zanzibar has asked HIPZ to transform the other, much larger and more challenging district hospital in Kivunge.
HIPZ will then be responsible for healthcare delivery serving a combined population of nearly 250,000 people.
So please support us in this great cause, every little counts so donate whatever you can spare even if it's just £1, and if you're a UK taxpayer make sure you tick the Gift Aid option so that the charity gets an extra 25% from the Inland Revenue at no cost to you.
In the unlikely event that either of us are unable to complete the challenge due to illness or injury our donations will be transferred to whoever is still running. Many thanks. Katy
