Dreams Can Come True · 15 September 2010

We are a Colchester based charity which provides specialist palliative and end of life care to local people facing incurable illness in north east Essex, supporting them, their families, friends and carers.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

We are embarking on a 9 day long bike ride covering 300 miles in order to raise money for St Helena Hospice, Colchester.

To tell the truth we would have done the ride anyway because it’s what we like to do. Unfortunately this same trip was booked to do last year and then had to be cancelled when it was discovered that Rick had bowel cancer.

Following an operation and a course of chemotherapy Rick is continuing to recover and this ride has been rebooked, as the desire and determination to do it has become even stronger because of last year’s events.

The ride will start in Pennsylvania along the Great Allegheny Passage, a disused railway, until it becomes the Chesapeake and Ohio canal towpath. This towpath will take us to Georgetown in Washington, the end of the ride.

We are hugely grateful to have this opportunity to realise this dream, made all the more poignant because we've had to wait to do it, and at times doubted it would even be possible.

Cancer has helped us not to presume tomorrow but to seize each day as the gift it is and to live it well.

The hospice has been like a beacon in what has sometimes been a very dark storm, and it is our privilege to do this ride not just for us but for St Helena's too.

If you want to check out the ride that we'll be doing, there are some great clips on Youtube. You'll be able to picture us, just tap in great Allegheny Passage or the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal.

Should you want to make a donation doing it through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails.
