Story
It is with great sadness that we announce Ken passed away at his Plymouth home on September 11, 2012. He was 61.
With the blessing of Ken's close family, and thanks to the help of Bupa, Macmillan Cancer Support and Justgiving, a small team of his colleagues at The Plymouth Herald newspaper will be running the Bupa Great South Run on October 28 in his memory.
Stop press Oct 1: Ken's sister Gina, from Coventry, has also decided to run the race! We're delighted she'll be part of Team Ken.
Ken was thrilled and excited to be running the race in aid of other cancer sufferers, so The Herald's team is honoured to run in his place and do our bit to carry on the fundraising and training he started before his death.
This page remains open for donations and will remain open until further notice. Please continue to use it and help us boost Ken's fundraising total as much as possible.
If you have any questions or you would like to know more about the team running for Ken, please contact James Garnett at The Herald on 01752 765529 or email jgarnett@theplymouthherald.co.uk
As a mark of respect, the rest of this page remains as Ken left it before he died.
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
I was diagnosed with tongue cancer back in November 2011 (I didn't even know you could have tongue cancer) but initally thought I had tooth ache so I went to the dentist. They checked me out and told me that the worst senario was cancer. As it turned out it was and I was told an operation to remove it was not an option so I had six weeks of radiotheraphy five days a week and one day a week of chemotheraphy. Thankfully in February 2012 I was told the cancer had gone. And to this day I am still cancer free.
During my period of treatment I was in and out of Macmillan's Mustard Tree sometimes just to get a free coffee and a warm friendly chat with one of the volunteers. I also found that my children found the Macmillan helpful as I made an appointment for them to talk to someone there because I felt there were questions they wouldn't ask me but maybe they would to someone else. As it turned out it was beneficial to them and to me as now knew what I was going through at the time.
I urge anyone who drinks and smokes excessively to be very careful and to cut down as when you read the literature on tongue cancer those who do drink and smoke excessively are more prone to getting it. I went from 18 to 11 stone in less than 5 months because of what the radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment does to you, although not everyone diagnosed would lose that much weight.
So I have decided to do this run in order to raise some very much needed funds to help in the fight to find a cure for cancer and to help those who have yet to be diagnosed.
So I urge you to please sponsor me no matter how little. Every penny counts in the fight for a cure.
Thankyou
