Story

Kenny, who is a former night club manager, first noticed something was wrong when he was at work one Saturday night, he suffered a complete explosion of blood, and went straight away went to his GP who diagnosed piles. Kenny asked his GP whether it could be bowel cancer as he had passed a huge amount of blood but his GP said, 'No, it isn't'.

His doctor gave him pile cream, not being happy Kenny returned to the doctors, they refused to do a rectal examination due to one being done the previous week. Kenny went back to see his doctor several times. He had moved to Halifax in 2006 but kept his GP in Preston for several years after that as he trusted him.

He changed GPs, seeing another one in Halifax a few times, who also gave Kenny pile cream, until eventually, on one visit to the GP, by which time his symptoms were getting worse and worse, Kenny refused to leave the surgery until he got a referral.

He did, finally, and on 28 April 2011, Kenny went for a biopsy, to be told it looked like cancer and when Kenny asked the GP if it was cancer, he said, "The odds are against you, although you can't tell by just looking."

He got confirmation two weeks later on Friday 13th May when Kenny was told he had bowel cancer, and that he would need to see a surgeon the following week. He then had a colonoscopy and keyhole surgery to remove the tumour a few days later.

On Wednesday 25 May 2011, Kenny was operated on for eight and a half hours and had a colostomy, in Huddersfield hospital, where he stayed for five days.

He was so ill when he came out that he delayed the chemotherapy for a couple of weeks, then began nine cycles of chemotherapy treatment beginning with infusions, then tablets and 25 sessions of radiotherapy, which finished in February 2012.

Kenny then had another scan, and thankfully got the all clear, apart from bit of fatty tissue on the liver.

In April 2012, he had the colostomy reversed, and had an MRI to check on his liver. Then came the devastating news that he had secondary cancer in his liver, which meant more surgery, with a liver resection where he had two parts of liver removed in Leeds hospital.

"I was really upset about this diagnosis and felt I had let everyone else down. But I knew I had to get on with the treatment and I became so determined to beat it, I refused to take pain relief from the pcast machine as I was still managing my reversal operation from just four weeks previously, and morphine slows your bowels down. I went home and started to rebuild my life."

Kenny has now got the all clear from cancer and would like to create awareness and help others where possible get through their own journeys.

Recent blood tests have shown that Kenny's testosterone levels are failing, and he will need to be on HRT for rest of his life.

"Bowel cancer has had a major impact on my life, I split up with my partner because of it and I feel very bitter about the fact that it took so long to diagnose it."

Now, however, he has a much more positive relationship with his partner and sees his three year old daughter regularly. He is trying to keep healthy with regular visits to the gym and is training for the Great North Run in September this year which he will complete with his Sister Tracey and Brother in Law Pete.
