Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In 2007, at the age of 36, Bryn Williams was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive condition which affects the part of the brain which controls movement. The condition can cause difficulties which include tremor, stiffness and slowness of movement. Bryn set up two charities, both with the goal of raising money to fund research and treatment towards neurological disorders, Wobbly Williams and Funding Neuro.
I am raising money for Funding Neuro, which funds medical research to cure neurological disorders. To do this I have signed up to take part in the Perthshire Etape, a 81 mile cycle starting and finishing in Pitlochry, which should prove to be quite a challenge for me, being a relative novice, having only got off stabilisers at the age of 40! So for the last 2 months I have been building up my cycling stamina on mostly misty and wet Socttish Saturday mornings.
Over the last 3 years, Funding Neuro have been funding research involving the use of a catheter-based system which pierces the blood brain barrier and carries the medication to exactly where it is required…safely, reliably and repeatedly. The catheter-based system delivers a growth factor for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, and to date they have raised over £700,000 towards the cost of trials using that system. This system can also be used in the treatment of brain tumours in children and young adults, delivering chemotherapy directly into the tumour.
In 2014, Funding Neuro plan to raise £250,000 to kick-start trials for treating brain tumours.
