I’m taking part in The Big Walk 2018, a walking challenge on 22 June – a 26.2 marathon-distance Peak District walk starting in Lodge Moor on the edge of Sheffield, heading out to the Peak District and ending on the University campus.

This will be my first Big Walk, sadly I was out of the country last year. However, I'm keen to help play my part to fundraise for the scanner and also to help me be a bit more active in the months leading up to it. The scanner's role in helping to tackle alzheimer's is particularly close to my heart after watching my grandmother, the woman who raised me, suffer through the disease for the last few years of her life. If my, admittedly small, effort can in any way help prevent someone from enduring that horrible disease, then it will all be worth it.

Why are we doing this?

We are raising funds towards the University’s £2 million fundraising campaign for the Sheffield Scanner - a ground-breaking MRI-PET scanner facility, and the first of its kind in Yorkshire. The Sheffield Scanner will represent the next leap forward in medical and imaging research and have a crucial role for research and patients in many areas of medicine, including cancer, neurodegenerative diseases such as Motor Neurone Disease, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s, heart disease, diabetes and stroke.

We’re well over half-way to our target of £2 million – please support the Big Walk 2018 and help us reach our final goal!
