Ali and Reg Hannaford are currently on a once in a life time challenge to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise vital funds for The Fishermans Mission Charity. They flew out to Kilimanjaro Airport on Friday 8th March and set off on their monumental 8 day trek on Sunday 10th March. The 8 day itinerary is as follows:
Ndarakwai Safari Camp – 2 nights of acclimatisation and preparations for the Lemosho Trail.
Day 1 – 4x4 excursion into the National Park and light trek beneath the canopy to Mti Mkubwa
Day 2 – A walk through forest and high moorland and fist views of Kibo and Plateau
Day 3 – Trekking at altitude via the Cathedral, traversing the Plateau to the Shira Huts Camp
Day 4 – Barranco Camp. Early start trek to Lava Tower then traversing back down again to sleep.
Day 5 – A shorter day trek to Karanga Camp allowing for acclimatisation
Day 6 – Depart at sun break to Barafu, preparations for the summit
Day 7 – Head torches for the big-push to 19,710ft!! Enjoy the summit, take memorable photographs and descend.
Day 8 – Mweka Camp to Park Gate where the team will have some much needed R&R and time to reflect on this fantastic achievement
Day 9 – Flight back to Blighty!
Seemed like a great idea to raise funds for a charity and also have the experience of a lifetime. The fishing industry has been the life blood of our business and I just wanted to give something back via this great charity. We decided to take on this trip after attending “The Famous Exeter Christmas Lunch” – it’s surprising how brave you feel after a few glasses of wine! Ali Hannaford – MD, Paramount
All proceeds have been donated to The Fisherman's Mission to raise awareness and funds for fisherman and their families. Deep sea fishing is the UK's most dangerous peacetime occupation and on average each year 15 vessels are lost and 62 fishermen are killed or seriously injured. The Mission provides emergency and welfare support to fishermen and their families 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. They receive no government or Lottery funding and rely almost entirely upon voluntary contributions to fund their activities.
So please dig deep and donate now.
