My son, Alex, was diagnosed with Cancer in his brain (a glioblastoma) back in December 2016 when he was aged 12.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

Glioblastoma Multiforme, it’s a nasty word, worse than just cancer. It’s not just cancer, it’s an incurable, all consuming form of cancer. I shiver every time I hear it. My mum died from it in 2007, 17 long months after diagnosis and after trying everything to beat the beast. Devastation is not near enough a depiction of losing your mother, your best friend, your support at the age of 29 after a horrific year and a half of cancer treatment. I really hate cancer. It was bad enough that it had taken my mum at 54, denied her grandchildren and her lovely retirement, it also claimed my auntie at 38 leaving 4 children under 18 and another auntie has had it twice.  But what makes me furious, with proper rage is when it takes a life that has barely begun. On the day I ran the 401 marathon, I found out a friend’s son had a brain condition, which later turned out to be Glioblastoma Multiforme. I froze when I heard it being said but hoped that in the 10 years since my mum had had it, there would be some solution. Sadly that was not the case. Lots of lovely people funded Alex’s bucket list, to enable him to live those final months as he wanted. He lost his very brave and courageous fight on 23 December 2017,  just before Christmas and his 14th Birthday.

I attended Alex’s funeral on his 14th birthday and was blown away by the love and support he had from his wonderful mum, stepdad, siblings, family and friends. He was clearly loved by so many people and having lost someone so close to me from this horrific condition, I could feel the pain suffered by Beckie, Steve and their families.

We share a love of running and I ran part of the final 401 marathon with Alex’s stepdad Steve, who’s running 12 events in 12 months of marathon distance or more, and I’m good friends with Beckie, who is also running events for charity for Alex.  We’re all part of the same running group, which has provided much needed strength and support to them all.

I’ll be errrrrrrrr, 40 in 2 months time and I really don’t care about stuff to have. Our lives are full of just stuff. What I want is a better life, especially for kids who may end up with shorter lives than planned. So if anyone wants to give me anything for my big 40, please donate to my epic 40th crazy journey of 4 ultra marathons in my 40th year! I may not have done one yet but I’m a safe bet with six marathons behind me!! I have Green Man Ultra 30 on Saturday, with two double marathons in June and 100km ultra in July. I’m confident I’ll finish them all and I hope to raise as much as possible to assist lovely people in the battle against the big C in memory of Alex and my mum, who were the bravest of people ❤️
