Himalayan Rush Dualathlon · 28 March 2015

Our vision is to see life in all its fullness for Nepal's poor and disadvantaged people and communities. We do this by supporting local Nepali communities and healthcare services, to improve health, reduce poverty and promote social inclusion. Love, compassion, inclusion and dignity matter to us.

Story

He’s climbing Mt Everest. I'm doing a dualathlon.

As I work here in Nepal I work in the community program which is alongside Green Pastures Hospital. Everyday I see the needs around me, so much need to continue this work of rehabilitation to support those with Spinal Cord Injury, Leprosy, Cerebral Palsy and other disabilities but this work cant continue without funding!

Most of the patients treated cannot afford their treatment; many have already spent lots of money trying to find cures in places that promise they will walk again, with no change. Many are marginalised and most come with little hope for their futures. Green Pastures Hospital and our community based follow up can change this but it constantly struggles to find the funds to do it.

Recently I was doing some follow up in the Terai area which is the flat area near the Indian border; The  families I met there spoke so highly of the work of Green Pastures hospital. The wife of one client who had rehabilitation following a spinal cord injury leaving him paralysed said  "I didn't realise that we had people in Nepal who would love us and care for us, but the love and care from the staff in Green Pastures Hospital made us realise that there are. We never expected that."

Why a dualathlon? Why now?

Two months ago one of our team members Matt met Vishu Sijali, a local Nepali mountaineer and adventurer. Vishu shared with Matt his vision to climb Mt Everest and to 'give back' to an organisation that was truly helping poor Nepalis. Climbing Everest brings with it great attention and opportunity, and after Matt took Vishu to see the work of Green Pastures Hospital, Vishu decided to use his Everest expedition to bring attention to the plight of Nepalis living with leprosy and disability.

Inspired by Vishu's example, a team of us who work for the International Nepal Fellowship (who set Green Pastures up in 1957) are running the 'Himalayan Rush Triathlon' in solidarity with Vishu's efforts, and to raise funds and awareness for the Hospital ourselves.

I'm running the dualathlon which is 40km cycle and 10km run. But because it's in Nepal, you guessed it... hills, and lots of them. It will be tough and hopefully fun to train and complete this as a team!

I'd love you to support the work of this incredible hospital that is truly giving care to Nepalis who would otherwise have no options.

Thank you so so much for your support and encouragement for this work.
