Glack Attack · 16 November 2013

Around since 1923, SAMH currently operates over 60 services in communities across Scotland. These services together with our national programme work in See Me, respectme, suicide prevention, sport and physical activity; inform our policy and campaign work to influence positive social change.

Story

I will be doing the 'Glack Attack' 5k Mud Run on the 16th November in Dunecht, Aberdeenshire, alongside my lovely work colleagues in order to raise money for SAMH! The 'Glack Attack' entails a 5km mud run with a series of manmade and natural obstacles, over hills and within the water....in the obvious FREEZING conditions in sunny Scotland in November! For anyone that knows me well, I have never done a 5k, I barely survive in cold weather all wrapped up, let alone running in it and rolling around in mud (and possibly even snow!) So this will certainly be a challenge for me!

SAMH support individual's suffering from mental health problems, through offering Community Based Services across Scotland and promote many national campaigns aimed at reducing the stigma people with mental health problems can face in society. SAMH also place a large emphasis on national campaigns towards suicide awareness and prevention, such as their recent 'two too many' campaign.

One of the main reasons behind me doing this challenge is losing someone very close to me to suicide last year, who is extremely missed by myself and everyone that knew him. I will be doing the challenge in his memory. Alongside this, I have worked for SAMH for the past year and a half as a mental health support worker and have seen at first hand the difference this charity makes to people's lives. I am proud to work for an organisation that challenges stigma against people with mental health problems.

Any donations (no matter how big or small) for me doing the 5k would be greatly greatly appreciated!! X

£5  Could help our National Information Service provide  life changing information and support to people living with mental health problems.

£10 Isolation can contribute to poor mental health. £10 can help us reach people experiencing mental health difficulties, who have no support around them.

£20 Could help us provide a wide range of mental health and wellbeing events - from guided walks to mindfulness classes - in one of our resource centres.

£50 Getting together, sharing experiences and working as a group can help people's recovery. £50 provides creative materials like art or photography equipment to use in our groupwork sessions.

£100 Coming to terms with trauma such as childhood sexual abuse is profoundly distressing. £100 enables us to provide intensive therapeutic support to people who have had experiences - helping them to come to terms with emotional effects and move on.

£250 In Scotland two people lose their life to suicide every day. £250 helps provide training in suicide prevention, giving people the skills to help someone in crisis.

£1000 Often family members or friends are the main carers of people at risk of suicide. A donation of this size could help us set up support groups across Scotland for people concerned about loved ones at risk of suicide.
