Story

Assalaamu Alaikum brother and sisters,

Lewisham Islamic Centre have rescheduled their charity walk for 3rd April 2010 and I have created this page to get more Sponsors for the masjid.

My name is Zaki Thompson, and I am writing to my fellow brothers and sisters to help sponsor me taking part in this walk. This is our 5th Charity walk and we need all the help from the Ummah to raise money. Before you say yes or no, please read on and learn what the masjid provides.

We will be walking from Lewisham Islamic Centre to Regents Park masjid and back to Lewisham Islamic Centre.

History of the Masjid

Lewisham Islamic Centre began in the late 1970s with a small group of Muslims used to gather for Jummah prayers at a private house in South East London. Typically there would be five to ten people each week. These families pooled their resources and energy, and eventually purchased the property in Brown Hill Road, Catford, thereby establishing the first mosques for local Muslims.

The Brownhill Road building served the community well for some twenty years before it was finally recognised that it was no longer adequate for the needs of the growing congregation - indeed towards the end it had been necessary to maintain a large marquee tent in the back garden, to provide space for extra worshippers. We moved to the current site in 2002 with Imam Shakeel Begg. In 2008, Imam Shakeel left his position and moved to another masjid, and appointed Imam Saleem Beg to continue the hard work the masjid as been doing.

Since we have opened we have expanded the masjid giving sisters more room to pray, we have also included a book shop, library, gym and a Café.
InshaAllah our intentions are to remove the debt of the masjid and then expand the masjid for the growing community.

The masjid provides many activities and classes for the community at least every day of the week:

Schools:

Olive Tree School – Olive Tree School delivers the full range of National Curriculum subjects for the relevant stages, including Islamic Studies and Arabic, within a disciplined and caring Islamic environment.

Young Muslim Academy (Madrasah) - The Young Muslim Academy teaches Qur’an, Arabic and Islamic Studies to boys and girls from the ages of 5 up until 16 in afterschool and weekend classes. The YMA also provides a supplementary school teaching National Curriculum subjects such as English, Maths and Science.
The Young Muslim Academy seeks to educate young Muslims about the key tenets of Islam, to make them conscious of their identity, and instil in them a sense of belonging to Islam., they also provide a Sunday Supplementary School which helps the students with English, Maths and Science work

Classes that the masjid provides:

Fiqh Classes - This is an essential lesson for those who require a deeper understanding of Islamic Fiqh. Umdat ul Fiqh is a classical work by Ibn Qudamah in Hanbali Fiqh.

Foundations of Faith - This is a class for Muslims who seek to grasp the foundations of the faith.

Weekly Lectures - There are lectures every Friday that discuss various topics that are important to our religion and our community. These lectures will be delivered by various speakers.

Arabic Language Classes - These classes concentrate on teaching Quranic Arabic so that the individual has the ability to understand the words of Allah.

Quran Circle – The classes go through the quran to help pronounce the letters of each word of the Quran

Activities and groups that the masjid provides:

Dawah – The Dawah committee stands in front of the general public and helps people learn about Islam, by providing leafets, booklets and dvds, we never force people to learn about Islam but we always welcome everyone to the table.

Brothers and Sisters only Youth Clubs – The youth clubs helps the brothers get to know each other more as well as the sisters get to know each other more, providing days out and games

Lewisham Islamic Centre FC – The Majid provides a Islamic football team with Muslims and non-Muslims in its teams, we have a Senior team and U16s team in two Sunday leagues to date.

Swimming & fitness Classes for Sisters – The sisters can use the gym in their own times and stay fit as well as enjoy sister’s only swimming classes as well.

There are many more classes that the masjid provides but there is so much I can write, please sponsor me in this walk not for my sake but for the reward and happiness of Allah (swt) as Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "Every Muslim has to give in charity." The people then asked: "(But what) if someone has nothing to give, what should he do?" The Prophet replied: "He should work with his hands and benefit himself and also give in charity (from what he earns)." The people further asked: "If he cannot find even that?" He replied: "He should help the needy who appeal for help." - Sahih Al-Bukhari, Volume 2, Hadith 524

Every one of us aims high to be side by side with Prophet Muhammad (saw) in Jannah, and how do we success? By following the Quran and Sunnah and doing good deeds to please Allah (swt)
