Well the story started in 2000, when we were both still spring chickens, up for a challenge. We heard an incredibly inspiring speech about the work of Homeless International and decided that we needed to do something to show our support. And four gruelling treks later, here we are, ready (well that's very debatable!) to embark on a fifth trek in the mountains of India. So we've been desperately trying to get fit and raise lots of money to make all the pain and suffering worthwhile!
There'll be lots of sacrifices, never mind the trekking which has steep ascents and descents through the Whestern Ghats, reaching one of the 2nd highest peaks in Southern India at 2,675 metres. We'll be spending nights under canvas (not great on the old bones), there'll be no washing (aside from a babywipe or two), no toilets, and no make up (probably more of a sacrifice for others on the trek). If you give very, very generously, we promise that we'll have a good wash and brush up before we travel home! And just to reassure you, all the money that we raise will go directly to the charity and the projects they work with (not obviously on plush hotels!)
So what will you be coffing up your hard earned cash for? Well Homeless International is an amazing charity that works with partner organisations throughout Asia and Africa to help reduce poverty and improve the living conditions of slum communities. In our previous treks, we've been astounded by the impact of their work and the difference it is making to peoples' lives. As part of our trek in India we'll also visit a community that is being supported by Homeless International through their partner organisation IVDP (Integrated Village Development Project). With their support, the community is working together to save for community improvements to housing, toilets and school fees. Yet again we're sure we'll be humbled by the experience and see how important the work of Homeless International is - and most importantly, the difference the money we raise will make.
We'll get back from India on 1st December and promise to give you an update on how it all went (once we've recovered!)
