Deloitte Charity Challenge · 17 June 2015 to 4 July 2015 ·

Alzheimer’s Society, Mind and Prostate Cancer UK are delighted to be chosen as the charities of choice by Deloitte people for 2013-2016. By pledging to raise over £2million over 3 years, Deloitte staff and partners will be supporting research into finding a cure to beat dementia, helping reach over 4 million people with mental health problems at home or in the workplace and some 300,000 men at risk of prostate cancer. Alzheimer’s Society (reg charity no. 296645), Alzheimer Scotland SC022315, Mind (reg charity no. in England and Wales 219830, SAMH in Scotland SC-008897, NIAMH in Northern Island, XN47885) and Prostate Cancer UK (reg charity no. 105541).

Story

Firstly I want to stress that this trip is entirely funded by me- so all donations will go to charity. Also, whilst I do hope to enjoy the experience it will be incredibly tough - particularly given the high altitude and hot/humid temperatures.

The charities I am supporting are Alzheimer's Society, Mind and Prostate Cancer UK. It is a sad reality that so many people are affected by, or know someone who has suffered from, dementia or cancer. These charities have leading programmes in their field and your donations can make a real impact.

Challenge Summary

  • Location: The jungles of Borneo
  • Disciplines: Mountain Climbing, Cycling, Rafting

Details and Statistics

  • Mountaineering: Climb to the summit of Mt Kinabalu (4102m)
  • Cycling: Ride approx. 70km x-country and through jungle
  • Rafting: Survive approx. 6hrs of rafting the raging Padas River

I have been training hard since the start of the year, and have 20 more gruelling weeks of the training plan to get through. The biggest challenge I face is on the bike, having not ridden for years and never for any real distance.

Altitude sickness is also a major risk factor, and it preys on young fit males such as myself. Nothing I can do about that though.

As for the rafting, yes that sounds fun but 6 hours will be tough, especially after the previous disciplines. My hands will be blistered as I paddle furiously, and my legs will be screaming as I attempt to stay in the boat.

I will say it again, I have personally covered all the costs of this epic challenge. So, if you think this sounds tough enough, please give generously to these very very worthy causes.

THANK YOU!
