October 3, 2014 is the first anniversary of the Lampedusa tragedy, where over 360 people died when their boat sank off the Italian island of Lampedusa. To mark the anniversary and to raise awareness of the plight of migrants trying to reach Europe, we plan to walk along part of the route of the former Berlin Wall. October 3 is also German Unity Day, a national holiday to mark German reunification. The Berlin Wall is of course a symbol of a barrier that claimed many lives. All donations will go to UNHCR, the United Nations refugee agency which helps refugees around the world.
