<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt; line-height: normal; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: 12pt; color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;" lang="EN-US">For those who haven't yet come across it, the Unit is a small charity that works as a clearing-house to screen cases from people who need a barristers assistance, don't qualify for legal aid and cannot afford it themselves. They take cases from all over England and Wales, any area of law, consider if it is suitable, identify the discrete piece of work required and then try to find counsel of requisite experience and specialism to take it on. They have a special licence granted that allows them to provide a form of temporary direct access licence so barristers can be instructed directly by the applicant in need. </span><span style="font-size: 12pt; color: black; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman'; mso-fareast-language: EN-GB;"></span></p>
