I came from a simple family from the mountains of Minas Gerais in Brazil. I was lucky enough to go to good private schools, solely due to my mother's constant effort to sacrifice whatever she could to be able to afford our school fees. I know that made a difference to what I achieved today. I was only able to enter a good public university because I went to private schools until high school and developed my potential to the best of my capabilities.

Unfortunately that it is not what happens with majority of the young people in Brazil. Families are not able to afford private schools and the public education system is broken. Public schools are vandalised and teachers are demotivated. Young people with a lot of potential fall into crime and traffic as they are not able to compete with pupils coming from private schools to enter a good university. They have little chance to succeed in the future.

I chose to run for Aprender as they also believe that better education is the key for a better future in Brazil.
