Story

5 challenges, 1 fantastic cause!

On 21 May, I took part in the Chester (& my first ever!) Half Marathon...and completed it in 1 hour 57 minutes.

Then, on 10 September, I took part in the Great North Run, the world's biggest half marathon...and 2017's was the biggest EVER Great North Run! Over 43,000 people crossed the finish line and I did in 1 hour 47 minutes - finishing in the top 12% of runners!

Next...on 22 September, I joined Backhouse Jones' Girls team for Transaid's London to Paris Challenge, cycling 240 miles over 3 days through the English countryside and northern France before finishing at the Eiffel Tower.
Then, on 8 October, I completed the Chester Metric Marathon - running 26.2km (16.3 miles) in 2 hours 21 minutes to finish 229th out of 1083 runners and 60th out of 591 women!

Finally, on Sunday (15 October), I completed the Manchester Half Marathon in 1 hour 50 minutes.

So in total, I have completed almost 300 miles...all in aid of Transaid!

Every driver should be able to leave for a day's work without the fear that they may not come home because of a lack of training, or dangerous vehicles and roads. Every family should be able to access vital healthcare; nobody should be left behind. Every person should have the opportunity to build the skills they need to transform their future.

Transaid focuses on professional driver training, transport management systems, and rural access to transport to solve two of the biggest challenges in economically developing countries.

1. Supporting drivers, governments and training institutions to improve road Safety

In sub-saharan Africa, road deaths are the third biggest killer following HIV/AIDS and Malaria and the problem will only rise with the growing population.  Drivers are at risk every time they sit behind the wheel due to a lack of legal enforcement and training, and badly maintained and overloaded vehicles.

Transaid transforms driver training, driving standards and transport management systems making drivers more competent, vehicles safer and reducing death and injury on the road.

2. Empowering people to transform their own lives through access to vital services, such as healthcare

People living in rural Africa often struggle to access vital services. Around 75% of maternal deaths can be avoided through timely access to vital childbirth-related care.

Transaid's work includes an Emergency Transport Scheme (including the use of bicycle ambulances) to transport pregnant mothers with complications.  Transaid also helps community health workers to reach the families who need them, enabling women, children and men in rural communities to reach health services when they are in need.

These challenges provide the opportunity for me (and Backhouse Jones) to raise essential funds for Transaid's ongoing programmes in sub-Saharan Africa...and I am asking you to help!
