Story
Two and a half years ago my mother, Elaine Carne, was diagnosed with cancer. Despite all her relentless strength and courage she passed away on July 20th 2008.
The cancer she was diagnosed with is Mesothelioma which attacks the lining of the lung and is often caused by asbestos exposure. For most people affected, the cancer is diagnosed at such a late date that there is not much that can be done. With the addition of the distressing symptoms of pain and breathlessness, Mesothelioma is a very difficult to cope with, not only for the individual but also their families.
My mother
was often described as, ‘as beautiful inside as she was outside’ and to be
honest I don’t think there is a more fitting description. She had the most kind
and generous nature and was constantly doing things for everyone else. So I
thought it was about time to do something for her and others that this dreadful illness effects.
So on the weekend of July 24th I will be doing the Three Peaks Challenge which involves climbing the three highest peaks in the UK all within 24 hours. The peaks include Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis.
I will be doing all of this with close friends from Birmingham who have shown me the most amazing support throughout a very difficult time; Sunil Kandola, Caroline Doran, Harriet Pape, Fiona Greville-Heygate, Alice Dunn and the pro Andrew Stockley. This will certainly be a huge challenge for all of us especially after the uni lifestyle we have embraced whole heartedly for the last 4 years!
Thank you for all your support and I look forward to hearing from you.
