Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
On the 21 April 2013, I’ll be running the London Marathon in aid of the Stroke Association, and in memory of my Mum and Dad. Both Mum and Dad passed away due to Stroke, Dad in 2006 and Mum in 2009. Both deaths were very sudden. Before Mum died, we’d been talking about me running when I was younger, and my ambition since the first London Marathon in 1981 to run my home town marathon. On the back of this conversation, Mum bought me a pair of running shoes as a Christmas present which unfortunately, she was never able to give me as she passed away 2 weeks after she bought them. After Mum passed away, I decided to try an fulfil my ambition to run the London Marathon in memory of my parents while raising money for the Stroke Association. I’ve been lucky enough to be given an entry to the 2013 London Marathon by the Stroke Association. In return, they have asked me to try and raise £2,000 for giving me the opportunity of a lifetime to take part in this world-famous race.
I started running again in November last year, and as a trial run this summer, I ran the “Simmer Dim” half marathon in Shetland – you can see Gracie propping me up after I got my medal for finishing that race. In April 2013, I hope to get another photo, but this time with a different medal. My training is coming on well, and I’m up to running just over 20 miles a week, and all the support I get will help encourage me to train harder, such that I can run 26.2 miles in one day!
The Stroke Association believe in life after stroke. They work to prevent strokes and to support stroke survivors and their families through information and their “Life After Stroke” services. They campaign to raise awareness about stroke and improve care, and they fund research into prevention, treatment and rehabilitation.
Stroke is devastating and it has a massive and sudden impact. It’s the biggest single cause of adult disability in the UK and the third most common cause of death.
